Case Studies

Northleigh Primary (2005)

In the past The Children’s Garden has been developed and maintained by a number of different schools including Northleigh Primary School, Malvern in 2005. The children were involved in developing the inspiration and ideas and then in the construction and planting. During their involvement they used the garden in a number of different ways:

as outside art classroom, creating giant plant labels, mobiles, and batik tree hangings
as a way of teaching about the environment, wildlife, ecology and conservation
as a way of understanding growing and eating healthy food
as a way to support literacy developing stories and poems around their time in the garden
and as a way to support citizenship and PSHE, via team working and companion planting.

Hanley Swan, St. Gabriel’s with St.Mary’s C of E Primary School (2006)

The Children’s garden was handed over to Hanley Swan in 2006 who as well as continuing the work of Northleigh, also developed a number of projects including;

the development of a gardening magazine and plant seedlings which were sold by the children at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show they created a boat themed raised vegetable bed and a ‘Mary Mary Quite Contrary’ themed garden area and they made music instruments out of plant pots, seeds and nuts.

Broadwas Primary School (2007)

Broadwas took over the development of the garden in 2007 and created a theme based loosely on India.
Their projects included:
making a large pink Ganesh out of modrock which took centre stage in the jungle pond environment;
creating a fairy tree complete with Greenman;
growing, harvesting and selling their vegetable produce that they had grown throughout the year at the Malvern Autumn Show, including the ginger, okra, aubergines, and the first Mayan Gold Potatoes to be grown since the time of the Incas.
