The Malvern Autumn Show is a fundraising event for the Three Counties Agricultural Society. Registered Charity No. 511868.
The Bradstone Bacchus Garden, a modern interpretation, inspired by the roman god and his associations with wine and the theatre, is the work of Chris Beardshaw Mentoring Scholarship winner, Lindsay Anglin from Bristol, and will be on display in the ‘Plot to Pot Pavilion’ at the Malvern Autumn Show (27 & 28 September 2008).
Lindsay was awarded an RHS Silver medal for her ‘Twist In The Tale’ garden at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show in May, and then, following a live pitch on stage in the Show’s Design For Living Theatre, beat 12 other hopefuls to secure a year-long vocational scholarship with award-winning garden designer and television personality Chris.
In addition to working with Chris, and with nurseries and design contractors throughout the season, she also benefits from educational placements with the Royal Horticultural Society education and a solid programme of practical business support from leading hard landscaping manufacturer, and scholarship sponsor Bradstone.
The layout of Lindsay’s autumn garden is based on concentric circles, cleverly giving the impression of wine in a glass as the taster ‘tilts’ and ‘swirls’ to test for colour, clarity and aroma.
Contradictory angles and heights within the hard landscaping and glimpses of bold colouring in the planting create a sense of drama, and screens frame the garden like theatre wings, hiding and then revealing elements as the visitor walks around.
The planting is an informal tapestry of tempting fruits, flowers, vegetables and herbs, informally presented, and punctuated by pencil-like evergreens in the shape of lovely Italian cypresses.
Lindsay has been extremely busy since she won the scholarship back in May, assisting Chris with his show garden at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, working with suppliers and carrying out work placements. She will also be touring Aggregate Industries’ Bardon Hill Quarry and Bradstone’s Hulland Ward paving factory.
The scholarship is deliberately tough, challenging and most importantly, real, and briefing, feedback, questioning and training from everyone she comes into contact with on her year-long ‘journey’ is aimed at preparing her for the trials, as well as the joys, of carving out a professional career in landscape design in the future.
Her final challenge will be to design and build a courtyard garden, with guidance from Chris, at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May 2009.
Ian Wright from Bradstone said: “When we were looking for our scholar back in May we wanted to find someone with real energy and passion and we’ve found just that in Lindsay. The plans for the Bradstone Bacchus Garden look amazing and I can’t wait to see it brought to life at the show.
“I’m really excited about the next few months and working alongside Lindsay and am looking forward to seeing her creation at the Chelsea Flower Show after being under the guidance of Chris for a year.”
The Bradstone Bacchus Garden is one of six edible gardens in the event’s brand new ‘From Plot To Pot’ Pavilion, housing its own cookery theatre and featuring daily demonstrations of how fresh seasonal produce from the home garden can be harvested and prepared for the dinner table.
Chris Beardshaw will be in the theatre on Saturday 27, working with top ‘Italian Legend’ chef Gennaro Contaldo.
