Editor's Notes:
The Malvern Spring Gardening Show is a fund raising event and a joint venture of the Three Counties Agricultural Society (Registered charity no: 511868) and the Royal Horticultural Society (No: 222879), and is now in its 24th year.
The Show which is now in its 24th year is a joint venture of the Malvern-based Three Counties Agricultural Society and the RHS, and each year, RHS judges assess the event’s show gardens and student borders and award prestigious medals.
2009 is the first time that the RHS will judge gardens in the school section, and they will be looking for immediate impact, originality and theatre, excellent plants and relevant structures.
They will also be hoping to see sustainability in the gardens which should represent either an area to be enjoyed in amenity terms, or one which is pleasant to look at.
Said Sharon Gilbert, Press & PR Manager for the Malvern Showground: “The Malvern Spring Gardening Show has a reputation for championing up and coming talents; the Borders Without Gardens competition for student designers, the Chris Beardshaw Mentoring Scholarship scheme sponsored by Bradstone, for landscape designers, the Nursery for Nurseries for local and regional growers, for example, and of course the school gardens.
We like to support our exhibitors from an early age, and education is at the forefront of everything we do here at the Showground. We felt it was important to develop judging criteria for the school gardens as well as the show gardens this year, and we are delighted that our partner, the RHS, is going to assess the pupil’s efforts.”
There are seven school gardens at Malvern this year, designed and created by pupils of varying ages. Designs range from a healthy eating garden in the shape of a doughnut, a remembrance garden, with giant poppy, in recognition of those who lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and a Dig For Victory patch, complete with an Anderson shelter and some sheep!
