Editor's Notes:
The Malvern Autumn Show is a fund raising event for the Three Counties Agricultural Society (Registered charity no: 511868).
Not surprisingly, ‘The Good Life Pavilion’ takes centre stage at the event, and will be home to ten edible show gardens.
There’s a bumble bee haven from Brighton’s Claire Potter, a natural pantry from Nottinghamshire-based Andy Tudbury and a scholarship team garden from Gloucestershire designer, Paul Hervey Brookes, winner of the prestigious 2009 Chris Beardshaw Scholarship, sponsored by Bradstone.
There will also be displays of herbs from Hook’s Green Herbs of Staffordshire, a glorious array of vegetables and seeds from Thompson & Morgan, and G.M.E.A. Innes of Aberdeenshire brings ‘tatties’ to the fore with a unique ‘Story of the Potato’ display, to include varieties from the nineteenth century!
Chris Greenwood of Poultry Park in the Forest of Dean will be talking about cottage economy in the town and how to reap the health benefits of keeping chickens and eating free range eggs each week, and for those preferring to keep goats for a fresh supply of milk every day, there will be milking demonstrations over the weekend.
Tuscan-born chef Felice Tocchini, of Worcestershire brasserie, Fusion, will be rustling up a heavenly selection of tasty dishes inspired by the harvest, and using ingredients from the average home garden or allotment.
The Pavilion is also the venue for The Festival of Perry with tutored tasting workshops, wildlife in the orchard exhibits and displays of trees and fruit from the Malvern Showground’s National Collection of Perry Pear Trees.
All the tastes and colours of this wonderful time of year will be brought to life with ‘Harvest Fashion’, a clever collection of exquisitely designed costumes and accessories inspired by Nature’s bounty.
Said Sharon Gilbert, Press & PR Manager for event organiser, the Three Counties Agricultural Society:”The Malvern Autumn Show has always been about showing visitors how to tune in to happy, healthy living, by growing and harvesting produce and enjoying the satisfaction of cooking and eating what they sow.
It’s a culture which is very much in vogue, and becoming increasingly important to those who care about their general well-being, and many horticultural and countryside events are incorporating an aspect of the grow your own lifestyle, be it a garden, or a feature or talks.
Malvern is probably the first big Show, however, to take the theme one step further, and the new pavilion focuses not on a single aspect, but on every element of the good life lifestyle, including sustainable gardening, foraging and re-cycling, home crafts, energy efficiency, herbal healing, thrifty, wholesome cookery and small-scale livestock keeping.
I am sure it will be a great hit with our visitors who come from all over the country.”
Of course, ‘The Good Life Pavilion’ is just one of a whole host of features planned for the 2009 spectacular, now renowned as a truly delicious feast of country life and a charming mix of flowers, fruit and giant vegetables, exquisite crafts, traditional food and drink and plenty of quality shopping.
It’s a plant lover’s paradise, with thousands of blooms on sale from the country’s finest nurseries, and for enthusiasts, it’s the last chance of the season to view the inspirational Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show, covering more than 5000 square metres.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy meeting animals from around the World, including alpacas, Siberian huskies, Exmoor ponies, donkeys and dairy goats, and there are countryside exhibits of birds of prey, barn owls, ferrets and gun-dogs, stick-making, felt-making, blacksmithing and spinning.
Other attractions include vintage motors, a farmers’ market, floral art displays with a ‘Back To Nature’ theme and delicious food and drink stands. The Show is also the venue for the National Finals of the Young Farmers Club competitions, and the British Association of Landscape Industries’ (BALI) WorldSkills UK Landscape Gardening Competition final.
The Malvern Autumn Show takes place at the Malvern Showground in Worcestershire on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September 2009. There’s plenty of free parking and discounts for children (under 5’s free), families and groups.
