Malvern’s Chickens Are Completely Green!

According to a recent survey by DIY giant, B & Q, keeping chickens in the back garden is among the top five most-envied status symbols amongst homeowners, with 1 in 10 people either owning or planning to buy a chicken coop this year!

So, organizers of the national Malvern Spring Gardening Show, which opens this Thursday (7 May) are confident that a brand new Eco Home & Garden Area, complete with a chicken inhabited permaculture garden, planted up with chicken-friendly shrubs, and housing a chicken coop with living roof, will go down well with the event’s 90,000 visitors.

The new Eco Home & Garden area, packed with green ideas for the home and garden, is sponsored by Caves Folly Nurseries of Colwall, near Malvern, celebrating their 30th year in horticulture this year.

Products and information include everything from organic and peat-free plants, organic gardening pest solutions, copper tools, locally coppiced hurdles and furniture, composters, wormeries, wildlife friendly garden products, household gadgets and water-saving devices.

Chris Greenwood of Poultry Park in the Forest of Dean is the man behind the chicken display, which will include modern day hybrids, a bio secure run, and organic egg production. The garden also features a wind turbine and a solar display.

He says: “It doesn’t matter what colour chicken you choose, they are all green! This is all about cottage economy in the town, food miles nil, and you certainly don’t need a big house in the country to keep chickens and benefit from free range eggs each day.

We’ll be showing visitors just how simple it is to keep poultry, and illustrating the benefits to health by eating fresh eggs. Our coop roof is really like an egg salad, as it’s planted up with spring onions, lettuce and beetroot”
