Editor's Notes:
The Three Counties Show is a fund raising event for the Three Counties Agricultural Society (Registered charity no: 511868).
Assistance and participating dogs only.
In spite of the current, worrying decline of bees and other pollinators such as wasps, butterflies and beetles, the number of honeys, and honey and wax products being entered into competitions at this year’s event is actually up on last year, proving that beekeepers in the region are out and about promoting the importance of the honey bee.
Honey bees play a vital role in the pollination of food crops and ornamental plants and trees, but disease and environmental threats, such as warmer winters and wetter summers has seen the decline accelerating rapidly.
Said Sharon Gilbert, Press & PR Manager for show organiser, the Three Counties Agricultural Society: “The impact of the decline on rural industry, and more particularly to local food production is potentially catastrophic, so much so that in April this year, Defra announced it was making a £10 million investment into crucial research.
The British Beekeepers’ Association (BBKA) is encouraging both town and country gardeners to make their spaces bee friendly, and plant lots of pollen rich flowers and trees. 95,000 people swarm through our gates in June each year, so the Three Counties Show is the perfect platform to promote awareness of the plight of the humble honey bee to a vast audience from all walks of life.”
This year’s Bees and Honey section has an Observation Hive, stocked with bees and Queens, and there are classes for light, medium, dark, heather, soft set or granulated honey.
There are also classes for shallow and cut combs, honey cookies and cakes, sweet and dry mead, and beeswax candles.
Tickets for the Show are available in advance from the Ticket Hotline on 01684 584924 or online.
Book by Friday 12 June for discounted tickets.
