The Graduate Gardeners Ltd team is celebrating success yet again at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show after winning the Best Show Garden award for the fourth year running.

The garden, A Place to Reflect, won the sole Gold medal awarded this year to the eight designs at the show.

In the Botanical Art competition Brigitte Daniel, from Witney, Oxfordshire, was named Best Botanical Artist for her depiction of Primula auricula.

A host of schools were vying for top prize in the School Garden competition with Burlish Park Primary School from Stourport-on-Severn clinching the top spot.

Southfields Nursery, MFM1, cacti specialists, are Best in Show for the second consecutive year. The deserved accolade is due not only to the abundance of dazzling cacti flowers but also to the brilliantly-engineered symmetry of the display.

Show Garden Profile

Diapason of Colour
Designer: Caspian Robertson
Contractor: Surrey Gardens

This garden has been inspired by the pure and ideal harmonies described by the classical philosophers Pythagoras and Plato as embodying the perfect golden ratio.  This principle, evident throughout the natural world, is the foundation for Newton’s colour wheel, Goethe’s philosophy, modern chemistry’s law of the octave and aspects of string theory.

The garden displays the colour spectrum as an octave in a design drawn from Pythagorean geometric theory.  Pythagoras observed that all pleasing ratios correspond to the universal principle of the octave, reflecting naturally occurring proportions in mathematics, music, plant physiology and colours.  Tones of foliage and flowers progress across the visible light spectrum, with iron disks and bars denoting wavelength relationships.

After the show, the garden is being rebuilt at the Music Mind Spirit Trust and will open for charity as part of the NGS scheme.

Catering

The Society continues to support quality food and drink producers, and is stepping up its endeavours to source more local and regional suppliers using mainly British produce, for its catering at Shows and events.

The Three Counties Showground works closely with Brakes, a company which shares the Society’s own passion for supporting British produce, and is taking a leaf out of the Brakes’ book! Malvern has become the first showground in the country to be awarded a Red Tractor license, putting it ahead of the game. The Red Tractor scheme was launched in 2000 and is an independently inspected, nationally agreed standard, which unifies assurance schemes in all the major sections of food production.

Showground’s restaurants

Stockman’s Diner - Traditional roasts and all day breakfasts at reasonable prices. Now a Red Tractor licensed establishment.

Severn Valley Catering’s Food For Thought Café - A large choice ranging from scampi and chips to baguettes, burgers and salads.
They use British meat and Red Tractor milk, potatoes and onions when in season. Severn Valley is also working towards making one of its mobile units a ‘Red Tractor’ unit.

Relish - A range of hot and cold meals, salads and soups.

TCAS remains committed to promoting local producers, subsidizing trade stand space for exhibitors, using local firms to supply its catering contractors and providing a platform for highlighting local and British ingredients at its main shows. The long term aim is that visitors and exhibitors eating at the Showground will know that wherever possible, produce is sourced from the UK first.
